Platform Role & Insurance Responsibility
TRAVEL Lanka (operated by sanuaa infinity) is a marketplace platform that connects renters and riders with independent vehicle owners and drivers. TRAVEL Lanka does not own vehicles and is not an insurance provider.
The insurance arrangements on any booking are between the renter, the vehicle owner or driver, and their respective insurers. TRAVEL Lanka facilitates the booking but does not underwrite, guarantee, or administer any insurance policy.
Important: By booking through TRAVEL Lanka, you acknowledge that you have independently confirmed the insurance status of the vehicle or service with the listed owner or driver before travel.
What Is Covered
The following protections are expected on all listings on TRAVEL Lanka, though you should always verify with the specific host:
Under Sri Lanka's Motor Traffic Act, all registered vehicles must carry at minimum a valid third-party motor insurance policy. This covers bodily injury and property damage caused to third parties in an accident where the insured vehicle is at fault. All vehicle listings on TRAVEL Lanka are required to have this in place.
- Covers injury to third-party persons (pedestrians, passengers in other vehicles, etc.)
- Covers damage to third-party property (other vehicles, structures, etc.)
- Subject to the policy limits set by the insurer
Some vehicles listed on TRAVEL Lanka carry comprehensive insurance. Where this is the case, the listing will indicate it. Comprehensive cover may include damage to the listed vehicle itself, theft, and weather-related events — subject to the policy terms of the vehicle owner's insurer.
Renters should request proof of comprehensive cover from the owner before a self-drive rental begins. TRAVEL Lanka does not verify the validity of individual insurance documents.
What Is Not Covered
⚠ Read carefully. The following are generally not covered through any insurance arrangement facilitated by TRAVEL Lanka.
- Personal accident, medical expenses, or death of the renter or their passengers — unless the vehicle owner has taken out a separate personal accident policy
- Damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Damage resulting from use of the vehicle outside the agreed rental terms (e.g. off-road use when not permitted, sub-renting to another person)
- Losses arising from violation of Sri Lanka traffic laws (e.g. no valid driving licence, driving on a suspended licence)
- Damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence
- Loss of personal belongings inside the vehicle
- Consequential losses (e.g. missed flights, business losses due to a breakdown)
- Mechanical breakdown not caused by an accident
Recommendation: We strongly advise all renters and passengers to hold valid personal travel or vehicle insurance before every trip. This is especially important for airport transfers and long-distance journeys.
Damage Liability
When damage occurs to the rented vehicle, liability is allocated as follows:
| Scenario | Renter Liable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Accident where renter is at fault, vehicle has comprehensive cover | Excess Only | Renter pays the insurance excess/deductible as agreed with the owner |
| Accident where renter is at fault, vehicle has third-party only | Yes — Full Repair | Renter is responsible for the full cost of repairing the owner's vehicle |
| Accident caused by a third party (and proven) | No | Third-party's insurer is responsible; renter must assist with documentation |
| Damage caused by driving under influence or violating terms | Yes — Full Liability | Insurance may be voided; renter bears full cost including third-party damage |
| Pre-existing damage not reported at collection | Disputed | Always photograph the vehicle at collection and obtain owner sign-off |
| Theft of the vehicle | Depends on Cover | If comprehensive cover includes theft: insurer pays. If not: renter may be liable for the vehicle's market value |
Damage Deposit: Vehicle owners may request a refundable damage deposit at the start of a self-drive rental. This amount, and the conditions for its return, must be agreed and documented in writing (or via the TRAVEL Lanka booking chat) before keys are handed over.
Accident Procedure
If an accident occurs during a TRAVEL Lanka booking — whether a self-drive rental, chauffeur ride, or airport transfer — follow these steps in order. Acting correctly at the scene protects everyone involved and is required for any insurance claim to proceed.
⚠ Do not: Admit liability, make cash payments to third parties, or agree to private repairs without informing the vehicle owner and TRAVEL Lanka. Doing so may void any insurance cover and expose you to full personal liability.
Third-Party Claims
If a third party (another driver, pedestrian, or property owner) makes a claim arising from an accident during your TRAVEL Lanka booking, the following applies:
- Provide the third party with the vehicle registration number and the vehicle owner's insurance details
- Do not make any admission of liability or offer of payment to the third party
- Preserve all evidence — photographs, police report, witness contacts
- Cooperate fully with the vehicle owner's insurer if they contact you for a statement
Third-party claims under the mandatory motor insurance policy are handled directly between the third party and the insurer. TRAVEL Lanka is not a party to this process and cannot represent either side in a claim. The vehicle owner's insurance company will appoint an assessor and manage the claim under Sri Lanka motor insurance regulations.
If a third party contacts TRAVEL Lanka directly with a complaint or claim related to a booking, we will provide the relevant booking record to assist the process but cannot act as an insurer or guarantor of any payment.
Renter Responsibilities
By making a booking through TRAVEL Lanka, you confirm and agree to the following:
- You hold a valid driving licence appropriate for the class of vehicle rented (including a valid International Driving Permit if required for your nationality)
- You will not drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs ability
- You will not allow any unlisted or unauthorised person to drive the vehicle
- You will inspect the vehicle at collection and report any pre-existing damage to the owner immediately, via the TRAVEL Lanka booking chat to create a documented record
- You will use the vehicle only for lawful purposes within the agreed terms of the rental
- You will comply with all Sri Lanka road and traffic laws for the duration of the rental
- You accept that any fines, penalties, or toll charges incurred during the rental period are your sole responsibility
Pre-trip checklist: Before driving away, photograph the vehicle (all four sides, interior, odometer, and fuel gauge), confirm insurance details with the owner, and agree on the return process in writing via chat. This protects both parties if a dispute arises later.
Disputes & Resolution
If a dispute arises between a renter and a vehicle owner or driver regarding damage, liability, or insurance following a TRAVEL Lanka booking, TRAVEL Lanka will provide the booking record, chat history, and any available platform data to assist resolution.
TRAVEL Lanka does not act as an arbitrator and is not liable for the outcome of any dispute between users. Where good-faith resolution between the parties fails, the matter is subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of Sri Lanka.
For platform-related complaints (e.g. inaccurate insurance information in a listing), contact TRAVEL Lanka support and we will investigate and take appropriate action against the listing.
