From Colombo's coast to Ella's misty hills — 270 km of tea estates, waterfalls, and Sri Lanka's most iconic landscapes. Here's the full route with every stop worth making.
The Colombo–Ella road trip follows the A1 highway through Kandy, then climbs into the central highlands on the A5 via Nuwara Eliya before descending to Ella. Total distance: approximately 270–300 km. Allow a minimum of two full days — three is ideal.
Day 1: Colombo → Kandy (115 km, ~3.5 hrs). Day 2: Kandy → Nuwara Eliya (75 km, ~2.5 hrs). Day 3: Nuwara Eliya → Ella (75 km, ~2.5 hrs).
Sri Lanka's cultural capital and a natural overnight stop. The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa) is unmissable — arrive by 6:30 AM for the morning puja before crowds descend. Drive the Kandy Lake loop in the early morning for near-empty roads and great light.
One of Sri Lanka's tallest waterfalls at 109 m, visible directly from the A5 highway. Stop for 15 minutes, photograph from the bridge. Don't miss the tea factory viewpoint 3 km further up the hill.
Called "Little England" for its cool climate and colonial-era architecture. The drive through Horton Plains is one of the best in Sri Lanka — misty grasslands, World's End clifftop, and almost no traffic before 7 AM. Refuel here; petrol stations thin out after this point.
Sri Lanka's most photographed railway structure, 5 km outside Ella town. Best view is from the jungle path accessed via Demodara village road — park at the bottom and walk 10 minutes. A train crosses approximately every 2 hours.
Little Adam's Peak takes 45 minutes and rewards with panoramic tea estate views. Ella Rock is a 3-hour return hike — start before 7 AM to avoid midday heat.
The A5 between Nuwara Eliya and Ella has sheer drops and no guardrails in places. Take it at 30–40 km/h on blind bends. Particularly dangerous in mist and rain (October–January).
Kandy: Hotels on the hills above Kandy Lake — quieter, cooler, and easier parking. Nuwara Eliya: Colonial-era guesthouses near the golf course. Book ahead in season (April–June). Ella: Dozens of guesthouses on the main strip; quieter options 2 km outside town toward Demodara.
Ideal window: January–April — dry season in the hill country, clear skies, best mountain visibility. Avoid October–November (north-east monsoon) when the A5 can flood and roads become dangerously slippery.
